The Tehuelche: First Peoples of the Patagonian Coast

The Tehuelche peoples (Aonikenk and Gününa Küna) roamed the plateau and coast of Chubut for thousands of years. They hunted guanacos and rheas, gathered shellfish on the coast and moved with the seasons. Valdes Peninsula has archaeological sites with shell middens and stone tools.

When the Welsh arrived in 1865, contact with the Tehuelche was key to their survival: they traded meat, hides and feathers for bread and other goods. The Tehuelche Indian monument at Punta Cuevas commemorates that relationship.

Local tip: the monument stands on a viewpoint over the gulf; at sunset it is one of the best photo spots in town.
