Renting a car in Puerto Madryn gives you freedom, but a Valdes Peninsula day means 300+ km of gravel roads, no mobile signal and only one fuel station. Before you decide, compare both options.
Car rental vs private transfer with driver-guide
| Car rental | Private driver-guide | |
|---|---|---|
| Km per day on the peninsula | 380–420 km, mostly gravel | Same, but we drive |
| Insurance | Many policies exclude gravel damage, windscreens and tyres | Included |
| Wildlife timing | You research tides and schedules | Planned around high tide and wind |
| Groups of 4+ | One car + fuel + fees | Can cost about the same, without driving |
| Best for | Travelers experienced on gravel with spare days | Families, cruise passengers, first-timers, short stays |
If you drive on Valdes Peninsula
- Recommended top speed on gravel: 60 km/h (37 mph). Rollovers are the most common accident.
- Fill up in Puerto Madryn: on the peninsula there is fuel only in Puerto Pirámides.
- Guanacos and rheas cross without warning, especially at dawn and dusk.
- Carry water, warm clothes and a good spare tyre: there is no signal on most of the route.
- Use the parking areas at wildlife viewpoints; walking down to the beach is forbidden.
- In strong crosswinds keep both hands on the wheel and slow down when passing trucks.
