Valdes Peninsula Tour from Puerto Madryn: Full-Day Itinerary

The Valdes Peninsula is a 3,600 km² (1,390 sq mi) peninsula joined to the mainland by the narrow Carlos Ameghino Isthmus. UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site in 1999 for its marine wildlife: southern right whales, southern elephant seals, South American sea lions and the orcas of Punta Norte, famous for beaching themselves to hunt.

Valdes Peninsula wildlife by month

  • June to December: southern right whales (boat tours from Puerto Pirámides).
  • August to November: elephant seal breeding season.
  • September to April: Magellanic penguins at Caleta Valdés.
  • December and January: sea lion pups are born.
  • March and April: orcas at Punta Norte, around high tide.
  • All year: guanacos, maras (Patagonian hares), rheas, grey foxes and armadillos.

Local tip: if you travel in March or April, we plan the day in reverse: Punta Norte first, timed with high tide, when orca sightings are most likely.

Frequently asked questions

Is one day enough for the Valdes Peninsula?

One full day covers the highlights. Add a second day if you want whale watching and the orca coast without rushing.

Is there an entrance fee?

Yes, the protected area charges an entrance fee at the Ameghino Isthmus, with different rates for foreigners and Argentine residents.

Can I drive myself?

Yes, but expect 300+ km of gravel per day, no mobile signal in most areas and fuel only in Puerto Pirámides. See our car rental vs private driver guide.
