Whale Watching in Puerto Madryn: Boat Tours from Puerto Pirámides

Every winter southern right whales enter Golfo Nuevo and Golfo San José, on the Valdes Peninsula, to mate, give birth and nurse their calves. Whale watching boat tours are only allowed from Puerto Pirámides, about 100 km (62 miles) from Puerto Madryn. Boats keep regulated distances, and it is the whale that decides how close it comes. It is one of the most reliable places in the world to see right whales.

How we organize your whale watching tour

  • Private pick-up at your Puerto Madryn hotel or at the cruise pier, in our own vehicles.
  • We choose the sailing time according to the day’s wind: if the morning is gusty, we move the boat trip to the afternoon.
  • Combine it with a full-day Valdes Peninsula tour (Punta Delgada, Caleta Valdés or Punta Norte).
  • Short option: transfer + boat trip only, for travelers with limited time.

Boat tour or watching whales from the shore?

There is also a free option: El Doradillo, 17 km from Puerto Madryn, where whales come within a few meters of the beach at high tide. Ideally, do both: shore one day, boat the next.

Local tip: strong west winds can close the port of Puerto Pirámides. Leave one spare day in your trip and do not schedule the boat tour on your last day.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time for whale watching in Puerto Madryn?

September and October. Whales are present from June to mid-December, but those two months have the highest numbers and many mothers with calves.

Can I go whale watching from a cruise ship stop?

Yes, if your ship stays at least 9 hours in port between June and December. We pick you up at the pier and return you at least 60 minutes before all aboard.

Is whale watching guaranteed?

In peak season sightings are almost certain, but no wildlife can be guaranteed. If the port closes due to wind, we reschedule.

Do I get seasick?

The gulf is sheltered and boat trips are short. If you are prone to seasickness, take medication beforehand and choose the larger catamaran.
